Cursemire

Cursemire is a retro-inspired board game that blends eerie storytelling with simple, strategy-based mechanics. Designed around themes of risk, sabotage, and survival, the game features a full board layout, custom card sets, and tactile packaging.

Overview

Cursemire is a dark, story-driven board game where players race to break free from a cursed world. As they roll the dice and move across a twisted path, players draw from three card types — Twist, Trial, and Whisper — each triggering luck, strategy, or chaos. Players choose from four mysterious realms, each with unique traits, and use sabotage, secrets, and survival instincts to reach the Endholt Castle and escape the mire first.

Objective + Target Audience

Cursemire was developed as a semester-long Major Studio Project, focused on designing a fully realized board game from concept to final execution. The objective was to create an immersive, visually cohesive experience that combines storytelling, gameplay mechanics, and branding. This included developing the game’s concept, rules, visual identity, and all supporting assets, resulting in a complete and playable design system.

Process

The project began with developing the board base, starting from initial sketches and refining the layout digitally using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Through iterative design and user testing, the board was continuously adjusted to improve clarity, balance, and visual impact. Building from this foundation,

I expanded into designing the card decks, followed by the instruction manual and supporting assets. Each stage was guided by the original moodboards, as well as the established box, cover, and nameplate design, ensuring a cohesive visual and narrative direction throughout.

Final Product

The final result is a fully realized, physical board game, with every component designed and produced from scratch. This includes the game board, card decks, instruction manual, and packaging.

The outer box was handcrafted and enhanced using hot glue to create a textured, tactile surface that reinforces the game’s eerie, handmade aesthetic

As a last-minute adaptation, the game pieces were also created using hot glue in place of 3D-printed elements—resulting in unique, organic forms that ultimately added to the raw, experimental character of Cursemire.
