Lanternz is a yearly Halloween-inspired zine that explores the culture and mood of October through a gritty indie-punk design style, blending horror, fall trends, and DIY culture into a seasonal print and digital publication.
The zine presents Halloween as a full cultural experience—rooted in nostalgia, pop culture, and creative expression. Through a mix of structured editorial spreads and visually experimental layouts, Lanternz captures the visual chaos and comfort of the season, appealing to readers who treat October as a lifestyle.
Lanternz aims to celebrate Halloween as a full cultural season through a design-driven, editorial zine that blends storytelling, trends, and visual experimentation. It is designed for creatives and pop culture enthusiasts aged 16–35 who are passionate about Halloween, horror media, fall aesthetics, and seasonal culture, engaging with October as a lifestyle and form of creative expression.
I began by defining the target audience, core concept, publication frequency, and overall tone and mood for Lanternz. I developed moodboards and gathered visual references from media that inspired the zine’s gritty, indie-punk Halloween aesthetic.
From there, I experimented with AI-generated cover art to establish a strong visual direction and explore how it could interact with the masthead and overall identity.As the project developed, I intentionally integrated personal and narrative-driven content throughout the zine to give it depth and authenticity, shaping each spread’s visual style around its specific theme.
In line with the assignment guidelines, I also utilized AI as a tool to generate imagery and enhance spooky visual elements, which helped expand the visual language of the publication while maintaining a cohesive editorial style.
The final product is a 24-page printed and digital zine that includes a front and back cover, editorial articles, feature stories, advertisements, and visually designed spreads. It combines written content and imagery to create a cohesive seasonal publication, blending storytelling, cultural commentary, and design-driven layouts throughout.
