Thrasher Redesign

An unofficial redesign inspired by Thrasher magazine that reimagines the publication through a raw, rebellious editorial design style, blending skate culture, punk-inspired visuals, street photography, and underground youth aesthetics into a modern print and digital magazine concept.

Overview

Created for an editorial design course, this redesign reimagines the iconic skate publication through a gritty, rebellious editorial design style rooted in skate culture, punk aesthetics, and underground youth media. The project includes custom articles, advertisement layouts, full-spread photography pages, redesigned covers, and various editorial compositions created to explore dynamic typography, visual storytelling, and modern magazine layout design across both print and digital formats.

Objective + Target Audience

This redesign develops a cohesive visual identity across articles, ads, full spreads, and covers, aimed at Gen Z and young adults (16–30) interested in skateboarding, streetwear, and alternative/punk visual culture, as well as design-focused editorial audiences.

Process

I began by researching Thrasher’s existing brand identity, including its typography, colour palette, imagery, and a physical issue from February 2025, alongside developing moodboards to establish direction.

I then created two feature articles based on course briefs and progressively expanded the publication with additional editorial content, including advertisements for footwear and apparel brands such as Adidas and New Balance, refining layout, hierarchy, and visual consistency throughout the magazine.

Final Product

The final rendition is a 20-page printed and digital zine inspired by Thrasher, including front and back cover ads, editorial articles, feature stories, advertisements, and visually designed spreads. It combines written content and imagery to create a cohesive skateboarding and punk/alternative culture experience, reimagining the magazine’s identity through an authentic, modern editorial lens.
